MR. ECKELS IS CURRENTLY THE GUITAR INSTRUCTOR AT FLATHEAD HIGH SCHOOL
IN KALISPELL, MONTANA. HE HAS TAUGHT GUITAR AT NEW MEXICO STATE
UNIVERSITY AND THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN. HE IS AN AUTHOR OF NUMEROUS
GUITAR BOOKS FOR MEL BAY PUBLICATIONS AND ARTICLES FOR FINGERSTYLE
GUITAR MAGAZINE. HE RECEIVED HIS MUSIC EDUCATION CERTIFICATION IN
INSTRUMENTAL, VOCAL AND GENERAL MUSIC FROM NORTHLAND COLLEGE IN
ASHLAND WISCONSIN, A MASTERS DEGREE IN GUITAR FROM NEW ENGLAND CONSERVATORY
AND A BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN GUITAR FROM BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC.
HE IS A CONCERT AND RECORDING ARTIST OF CLASSICAL AND AMERICAN TRADITIONAL
MUSIC.

DAILY SCHEDULE IS ARRANGED SO STUDENTS HAVE AFTERNOON TIME
TO EXPLORE GLACIER NATIONAL PARK AND AN ABUNDANCE OF OTHER RECREATIONAL
OPPORTUNITIES. LODGING IS AVAILABLE CLOSE TO THE SCHOOL. STUDENTS
ARE ENCOURAGED TO BRING THEIR OWN ACOUSTIC GUITARS, BUT A LIMITED
NUMBER OF INSTRUMENTS ARE AVAILABLE TO USE.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
THIS CLASS IS DESIGNED FOR CLASSROOM TEACHERS AND EDUCATION
STUDENTS WITH OR WITHOUT GUITAR EXPERIENCE. BEGINNERS WILL LEARN
TO PLAY GUITAR WHILE THOSE WITH EXPERIENCE WILL PARTICIPATE IN AND
OBSERVE THE TEACHING PROCESS. STUDENTS WILL LEARN STRATEGIES AND
TECHNIQUES FOR TEACHING GUITAR IN A GROUP SETTING. THE COURSE WILL
BE ESPECIALLY USEFUL FOR CHOIR DIRECTORS, BAND DIRECTORS AND OTHER
MUSIC EDUCATORS WHO WISH TO SUPPLEMENT THEIR SCHEDULE TEACHING GUITAR.
TOPICS WILL INCLUDE: GUITAR TECHNIQUE, REPERTOIRE, IMPROVISATION,
MUSIC READING, ENSEMBLES, AND APPLYING MUSIC THEORY TO THE GUITAR.
THERE WILL ALSO BE A SURVEY OF TEACHING RESOURCES AND DISCUSSION
ON HOW TO BUILD A GUITAR PROGRAM IN PUBLIC SCHOOL SETTING.
COURSE CONTENT GOALS
AND OBJECTIVES:
UPON COMPLETING THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL HAVE THE SKILLS
NECESSARY TO TEACH GUITAR IN A GROUP SETTING. THE OBJECTIVE IS TO
LEARN HOW TO SET UP THE GUITAR PROGRAM AND CLASSROOM AND HOW TO
TEACH SONGS, SCALES, MUSIC READING, TECHNICAL SKILLS AND ENSEMBLES.
STUDENTS WILL ALSO BE INTRODUCED TO A VARIETY OF ASSESSMENT METHODS.
ASSIGNMENTS (10 POINTS
EACH):
1. DAILY WRITTEN SUMMARIES - STUDENTS WILL REFLECT IN THEIR OWN
WORDS THE COURSE CONTENT FOR EACH DAY.
2. STUDENTS WILL COMPILE A 'TO DO LIST' FOR SETTING UP THEIR OWN
PROGRAM, MATERIALS AND CLASSROOM.
3. STUDENTS WILL WRITE A LESSON PLAN FOR A SONG OF THEIR CHOICE.
4. STUDENTS WILL WRITE AN ANALYSIS OF MELODY BY CONVERTING IT FROM
NOTATION INTO TWO TYPES OF TABLATURE.
5. STUDENTS WILL DEMONSTRATE PROFICIENCY ON THE FOLLOWING: THE SEVENTEEN
NATURAL NOTES.
6. SCALES IN THE KEYS OF C, A MINOR, G, AND E MINOR.
7. CHORDS IN THE KEYS OF C, D, E, G, A, A MINOR, D MINOR AND E MINOR.
8. STUDENTS WILL DEMONSTRATE PROFICIENCY WITH STRUMMING AND FINGERPICKING
PATTERNS.
9. STUDENTS WILL DEMONSTRATE PROFICIENCY IN SINGING AND PLAYING.
10. STUDENTS WILL DEMONSTRATE PROFICIENCY IN PLAYING MELODIES. INDIVIDUALLY
AND AS PART OF AN ENSEMBLE.
